Our friends in Merry's class at our Birchland Park partnership site were wrapping up an Ancient Egypt activity! From Merry: As promised in the last newsletter, here is the latest concerning the pharaoh apple mummies. They were removed from the natron mix after a two week drying out process. The results were interesting. The students were gung ho to grab a load of toilet paper from Costco and wrap them up. However, we skipped the wrapping part and the pharaohs’ sarcophagus became the classroom trash can. But it was a fun project! Our friends in our East Longmeadow High School partnership site were busy reading and doing book reports on what they'd read! We love to see our students hard at work! Our students continue to WOW us! We are absolutely delighted to announce that seven of our middle school students in our Birchland Park partnership classrooms are going to be published authors! From Merry: The Young Writers is an organization that encourages students to read and write. They held a contest in the fall and seven of our students entered. They were required to write a 100 word saga. It was much harder than they thought! They had to do a lot of revising and tons of editing. Thank goodness the title was not included as part of the word limit! Sarah Waterhouse, the editor, wrote that she was very impressed with the imaginations of our students. She went on to explain that having the work of each student entered from the same school chosen to be included in the book is very rare! Just more proof of how creative and skilled our students are! A couple of weeks ago, we hosted a Family Winter Festival! We welcomed our students, staff, and families to campus for a great morning of games and activities! It was a great time. We are THRILLED to announce the first ever Bedrock Literacy Virtual Conference hosted by Willie Ross School for the Deaf! This conference will take place from March 18 to 21, 2024 via Zoom! The costs are $20 per day or $70 for the entire week. ASL interpretation will be provided during the whole conference. Our friends at the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program is hosting their annual Parent Forum on March 2nd at Framingham State University. The day runs from 9-4, but the morning will focus on topics for parents of children ages birth-three and the afternoon will be education related presentations. Families are welcome to attend all or a part of the day. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and to participate in some great learning experiences. Our middle school students placed FOURTH place in the Bison Division of Battle for the Books! There were 27 schools altogether in this tournament. Placing 4th was a huge achievement for our students! The Championship match has not happened as of this posting, but it will be Venado Middle School against Iowa School for the Deaf. On the bottom-center of the image, there is a list of the runners-up.
